I first played Lemmings on the Sega Genesis in 1992, a port of the computer game by DMA Design. It was a different kind of puzzle game for the console, a quiet and thoughtful contrast to the platformers and shooters that dominated the era. You weren't controlling a single hero, but managing a crowd of tiny, mindless creatures on a march to their doom.

Your job is to guide a line of lemmings from the entrance to the exit of each level. They walk forward, oblivious to pits and hazards, so you assign specific roles to individuals in the crowd. You might make one a blocker to stop the parade, another a digger to tunnel through the earth, or a builder to create a staircase over a chasm. The challenge is in timing these assignments and managing your limited number of special skills for each type. The game starts simply but the puzzles quickly become complex, demanding careful observation and planning. It feels like conducting a slow motion rescue operation, where a single mistake can send the whole group tumbling into a trap.
