I picked up LEGO Indiana Jones 2 for the Nintendo DS back in 2009, a time when the handheld was full of these blocky adventure games. It was developed by Traveller's Tales, the same studio behind the other LEGO titles, so I knew what kind of experience to expect. This one was meant to continue the story from the films, covering the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and letting you replay scenes from the original trilogy in a new way.

You control Indy and a roster of other characters, switching between them to use their unique abilities to solve puzzles. The main goal is to progress through the story levels, which are broken into smaller, screen by screen areas that you explore. You spend a lot of time punching apart LEGO objects to collect studs, the game's currency, and then using the pieces that fly out to build new contraptions like levers or bridges. Combat is simple, mostly just mashing the attack button to swing your whip or fists at enemies, and the boss fights usually involve figuring out a specific pattern to win. The pacing is generally relaxed, without much punishment for failure, making it a good game to just pick up and play in short bursts. It feels like a cheerful, hands-on puzzle box where you are constantly taking things apart and putting them back together to see what happens next.
