Kujaku Ou 2 – Geneijou is one of those Genesis games that feels like stumbling into a weird, forgotten folktale. You play as this mystical warrior—part samurai, part sorcerer—who’s basically cleaning up a mess of demons and curses. The first thing you’ll notice? The backgrounds are gorgeous for a 16-bit game, all moody temples and shifting dreamscapes. Then a skeleton throws a sword at you.
It’s not just hack-and-slash, though. There’s this weirdly satisfying rhythm to it—dodging floating heads, figuring out which magic spell actually works on the boss (hint: fire does not solve everything), and occasionally backtracking because you missed a hidden scroll. The platforming’s a little stiff by modern standards, but it’s got that old-school charm where every jump feels earned.
If you’re into obscure action-RPG hybrids with a side of Japanese mythology, this one’s a trip. Just don’t expect the game to explain anything—half the fun is deciphering what the heck is happening.
