About Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor - 98-shiki Kidou Seyo! (japan)

I picked up Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor for the Sega Genesis back in the day, a 1992 release from Sega. It was part of that wave of games based on anime properties, trying to capture the show's mecha police vibe on a 16-bit console. You don't see many games from that developer now, but it was a solid attempt to bring the franchise to life.

You control a pilot from the Special Vehicles Division, navigating a side-scrolling world on foot and inside your Labor mech. The main goal is to investigate incidents and complete missions, which often involves switching between exploration and combat. A signature mechanic is the transformation; you can exit your Labor to interact with smaller objects or enter buildings, then call it back when you need its firepower. The combat is straightforward, using the Labor's weaponry against enemy mechs and vehicles, but the pacing is methodical. You spend a lot of time moving through urban environments, dealing with occasional platforming sections and enemy encounters. The difficulty comes from managing your limited resources and navigating the sometimes claustrophobic stages. It feels like a slow, deliberate simulation of piloting a heavy machine in a crowded city.
