I first played JuJu Densetsu, known as Toki: Going Ape Spit in North America, on the Sega Genesis back in 1991. It was developed and published by TAD Corporation, arriving during a time when the console was full of arcade ports and side scrolling action games. This one stood out because it was a conversion of the arcade game Toki, where you control a warrior transformed into a monkey, and it had a certain colorful, cartoonish look that was common for the era.

You play as Toki, a jungle hero turned ape, and your goal is to rescue your kidnapped girlfriend from an evil wizard. The core gameplay is running and jumping through levels, but your main method of attack is spitting. You fire globs of spit as projectiles at a variety of enemies, from zombies to giant beasts. The levels are linear but require careful platforming, and you can collect power ups to change your spit into more powerful weapons like fireballs. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is quite unforgiving, with enemies swarming and precise jumps needed to survive.
