Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by Data East. It was part of that wave of colorful, side scrolling platformers that filled the 16 bit era, a time when games were often straightforward adventures with a simple premise. You play as one of two cavemen, Joe or Mac, on a quest to rescue your kidnapped cavewomen from a rival tribe of neanderthals.

You control your chosen caveman through a series of prehistoric levels, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to fight through dinosaurs and other cavemen to reach the end of each stage. Your primary weapon is a bone club that you can swing, but you also pick up temporary power ups like boomerangs and fire wheels to throw at enemies. The game is known for its fast pace and can be quite difficult, with enemies swarming from all directions. Navigating the levels and managing your limited attack range against numerous foes creates a constant, hectic challenge. It feels like a frantic scramble through a cartoon jungle.
