James Bond 007: The Duel came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by The Kremlin and published by Domark. It was one of several action games on the system trying to capture the feel of a big license, with the kind of colorful, detailed sprites that were common at the time.

You control James Bond through a series of side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue hostages scattered around each stage and then find and arm a bomb to complete the level. The game uses a life bar system, so you can take a few hits from enemy guards or their gunfire. A signature mechanic is the need to duck to avoid bullets, but the animation for ducking has a slight delay, which makes timing your dodges tricky. Another is the way you interact with hostages and the bomb; you have to stand in the right spot and press a button, which can feel a bit finicky when you are under pressure. The pacing is methodical, as you carefully clear each screen of enemies before proceeding, but the somewhat unresponsive controls and commitment to animations for basic actions ramp up the difficulty. Playing it feels like a constant negotiation with the game's own rules.
