About J. League Champion Soccer
J. League Champion Soccer came out for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in Japan, in 1993. It was published by Sega, arriving during a period when sports games were becoming more detailed and region specific. This title focused entirely on Japan's professional soccer league, the J. League, which had just launched that same year, offering a domestic alternative to the more internationally focused soccer games of the time.
You control one of the eleven players on your chosen J. League team, with the primary objective being to outscore your opponent. The game features a strategic through-pass system for breaking defensive lines and a dedicated button for sliding tackles, which are effective but risky. Matches are fast paced, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially when the computer seizes on a defensive mistake. It feels like a genuine, if sometimes frantic, simulation of a 90s J. League match.
