About International Rugby (europe)
International Rugby came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, published by Virgin Games. It was one of the few rugby titles available on the system at the time, offering a straightforward take on the sport during an era dominated by football and American football games.
You control a team of fifteen players, directing their movements and initiating tackles or passes. The main objective is to outscore your opponent by carrying the ball over the try line or kicking goals. Key mechanics include a tactical kicking game for gaining field position and a set piece system for scrums and lineouts, which require careful timing to win possession. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can be sharp, especially when the computer seizes on a handling error. It feels like a challenging, no frills simulation of the sport's basic flow.
