Inazuma Eleven came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Level-5. It was part of that wave of DS games that really used both screens and the stylus in clever ways, fitting right in with the portable RPGs of the time.

You control Mark Evans, a passionate goalkeeper who has to recruit and train a full soccer team from his nearly empty school club. The main goal is to build your team's strength and strategy to compete in the Football Frontier tournament, facing off against increasingly tough schools. The game mixes exploration on the top screen, where you walk around towns and schools to find new players and trigger story events, with soccer matches that play out like tactical RPG battles. You use the stylus to draw paths for your players' movements and to execute special moves by tracing specific patterns on the touch screen. The pacing starts slow as you build your roster, but the matches become intensely difficult, demanding careful management of your team's energy and positioning. It feels genuinely rewarding to see a last-minute, perfectly drawn special move turn the tide of a match.
