Immortal came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Electronic Arts. It was part of that early wave of action RPGs on the system, a time when developers were experimenting with blending different genres. You played as a wizard's apprentice, and the game immediately set you in a vast, multi-level dungeon to find your missing master.

You control the apprentice from an isometric perspective, moving screen by screen through the labyrinth. Your main goal is to explore the dungeon's many floors, fighting monsters with a short-range dagger or a limited supply of magic spells. The combat is direct but unforgiving; you have to get close to enemies, and your health depletes quickly if you make a mistake. Navigating the environment is a key part of the challenge, as you search for keys and push blocks to solve simple spatial puzzles. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty is consistently high, demanding careful movement and resource management. It feels like a tense, methodical crawl through a dangerous and confusing fortress.
