Hyper Dunk - The Playoff Edition is one of those early '90s Sega Genesis basketball games that somehow feels both janky and ridiculously fun at the same time. The Japanese version has this over-the-top arcade vibe—players move way faster than real humans, dunks look like they defy physics, and the announcer yells in Japanese the whole time. First time I booted it up, I accidentally did a 720-degree spin dunk and just started laughing.

It’s not NBA Jam, but there’s something charming about how chaotic it gets. The controls take a minute to get used to (why is passing so stiff?), but once you figure out the turbo button, it clicks. Also, the pixel art for the crowd animations is weirdly detailed—some guy in the front row always looks like he’s having a meltdown.

If you’re into retro sports games with more style than realism, this one’s a hidden gem.
