Head-On Soccer is one of those Sega Genesis sports games that somehow nails the chaotic fun of actual soccer without taking itself too seriously. The pixelated players move with this weirdly satisfying chunky animation, and the ball physics are just unpredictable enough to keep things interesting—like when you think you’ve lined up the perfect shot, only for it to ricochet off some defender’s giant head.

Matches are fast, controls are simple (pass, shoot, and a surprising amount of slide tackles), but there’s a sneaky bit of strategy in how you position your team. I remember getting wrecked at first because I kept sprinting straight at the goal like an idiot, but once you figure out spacing and timing, pulling off a long-range goal feels stupidly rewarding.

It’s not the prettiest or deepest soccer sim out there, but that’s kind of the charm. If you’re into retro sports games with a little jank and a lot of personality, this one’s a solid time. Just don’t blame me when you lose an hour to rematches trying to redeem yourself after an own goal.
