Growl was released for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Taito. It arrived during a period when the 16-bit console was filling up with various action titles, and this one offered a straightforward premise. You step into the role of a forest ranger, a character tasked with a simple but urgent mission.

You control the ranger through side-scrolling stages, moving screen by screen as you punch and kick your way through waves of poachers. Your main objective is to stop these hunters from killing endangered animals. The game gives you a few key tools: you can attack enemies directly, rescue animals by touching them, and use a limited screen-clearing bomb when overwhelmed. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty comes from the sheer number of enemies that swarm you from both sides. It feels like a relentless brawl where you are constantly outnumbered, making each cleared screen a small victory.
