About Gouketsuji Ichizoku
I first played Gouketsuji Ichizoku on the Sega Genesis in 1994, a time when the console was full of arcade ports and original fighting games. This one was published by Atlus, and it always felt a bit different from the more famous franchises. It was part of that wave of 2D fighters trying to carve out a unique identity, with a cast drawn from a single, strange family.
You control one of several characters from the Gouketsuji clan, each with their own fighting style, and your goal is to win a family tournament. The combat uses a four-button layout for punches and kicks, but its signature mechanics are the super moves and the ability to sidestep attacks by moving into the background. Another key feature is the desperation move you can perform when your health is low, turning the tide of a match. The pacing is fast, and the computer opponents can be brutally difficult, demanding quick reflexes and a good memory for each character's special inputs. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic test of your ability to read an opponent and capitalize on brief openings.
