About Gauntlet Iv (september 1993)
Gauntlet IV came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed by Atari Games and published by Tengen. It was part of that wave of arcade-style games that felt right at home on the Genesis, offering a familiar formula with some new twists for players who had already spent time with the series in arcades.
You pick one of four characters: Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, or Elf. Your job is to fight through room after room of a dungeon, clearing out ghosts, grunts, and demons. You use your character's specific weapon, like the Warrior's sword or the Elf's bow, to attack while constantly managing your health and magic meters. The game is played screen by screen; you can't proceed until you defeat every enemy in the current room. A major feature is the Quest mode, which adds a story and RPG-like character progression not found in the original arcade version. The pacing is relentless, with enemies spawning continuously if you linger, and the difficulty encourages careful movement. It feels like a tense, methodical scramble for survival where every health point matters.
