Garou Densetsu – Shukumei No Tatakai (or Fatal Fury: Destiny’s Battle, if you prefer) is one of those Sega Genesis fighters that feels like it’s trying to punch above its weight. You’ve got your usual SNK-style brawlers—Terry Bogard looking as scruffy as ever, Andy throwing fireballs like there’s no tomorrow—but the real kicker here is the two-plane system. One second you’re trading blows on the foreground, the next you’re hopping lanes to dodge a super.

It’s not as smooth as later Fatal Fury games, and some of the AI opponents cheat like crazy (looking at you, Geese), but there’s something charming about how janky and aggressive it feels. The music’s got that crunchy Genesis synth, and landing a desperation move at the last second still feels ridiculously satisfying. Just don’t expect Street Fighter-level polish—this one’s all about rough edges and nostalgia.

If you’ve got a soft spot for 90s fighting games that don’t play fair, this one’s a time capsule worth dusting off.
