Final Zone came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed by Wolf Team and published by Telenet Japan. It was part of that early wave of Genesis titles trying to carve out a space for action RPGs on the console, sitting alongside other exploratory games of the period. You control a lone warrior navigating a series of interconnected, screen by screen dungeons. Your main goal is to find and defeat the evil overlord, which involves exploring every corner of these maze-like areas. The combat is straightforward; you swing your sword at the various monsters that appear, and you can also use a bow for ranged attacks. You collect keys to open locked doors and search for health potions to survive the constant enemy assaults. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and the difficulty is punishing; enemies respawn quickly, and health is scarce. Playing Final Zone feels like a constant, tense struggle against the environment itself.
