Final Fantasy V came out for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, developed by Square. It was part of that wave of ambitious RPGs that really defined the 16-bit era, building on what the earlier games had established without the same level of immediate recognition outside Japan. For a long time, the only way to play it in English was through fan translations, which is how many of us first experienced it.

You control a small party of characters traveling across a world map and exploring towns, dungeons, and caves screen by screen. Your main goal is to stop an ancient evil from merging the elemental crystals and throwing the world into ruin. The game's signature feature is the Job System, which lets you assign roles like Knight, Black Mage, or Monk to your party members and mix abilities from different classes. You spend a lot of time in turn-based battles, managing your party's equipment and skills, and navigating multi-level dungeons filled with puzzles and traps. The pacing is brisk, with new areas and jobs unlocking steadily, and the "easy" version makes the often punishing difficulty of the original much more manageable. It feels like a game built around experimentation, where you are constantly tweaking your team to see what new strategies you can create.
