Two of its signature mechanics are the Active Time Battle system, where enemies attack in real time while you select commands, and the Esper system, which lets you teach magic spells to any character. The pacing is deliberate, with a difficulty that spikes in certain dungeons if you are not prepared. Playing it feels like guiding a group of broken people through a world that is actively falling apart.
