FIFA Soccer 96 on the Genesis was one of those games that made you feel like you were actually controlling real soccer—well, as close as you could get in '95, anyway. The animation was smoother than earlier FIFAs, players had actual faces (sort of), and the commentary tried its best not to sound like a broken record. I remember spending way too much time in the indoor soccer mode, sliding around like it was some kind of arcade hockey game.
It’s got all the big leagues and teams of the era, so if you’re nostalgic for mid-90s football stars, this is your time machine. Just don’t expect the precision of modern FIFA—tackles are chaotic, through balls are a gamble, and the refs might as well be blind. Still, there’s something charming about how rough around the edges it is.
You can play it on an emulator now, but good luck not getting distracted by that aggressively upbeat menu music.
