El Viento is one of those Genesis games that feels like it got lost in the shuffle back in the day—which is a shame, because it’s got this weird, chaotic energy I love. You play as Annet, a whip-wielding magic user who basically parkours through 1920s ruins while blasting cultists and monsters. The controls take a second to click—her jumps are floaty, and the screen scrolls automatically, which can feel brutal when enemies come at you from all sides. But once you get the rhythm down, chaining spells and dodging feels surprisingly slick.
The art’s got this moody, almost European comic book vibe, with deep blues and purples in the backgrounds. And the bosses? Huge, screen-filling monstrosities that make you scramble to figure out their patterns. It’s not an easy game, but there’s something satisfying about barely surviving a level with a sliver of health left. If you’re into obscure action-platformers with personality, this one’s worth digging up.
