About Espn Speed World (beta)
ESPN Speed World was a Sega Genesis game, though it never got a full release and stayed in its beta form. It was developed by Park Place Productions and published by Sony Imagesoft, which was an interesting combination for a Genesis title. This was during a time when racing games were trying to capture a more authentic, televised sports feel, and this one was clearly aiming for that ESPN presentation.
You control a stock car on tracks designed to mimic real NASCAR ovals and road courses. The main objective is straightforward: qualify well and then win the race against a field of computer opponents. The handling requires careful throttle control to avoid spinning out, especially when navigating tight corners in a pack of cars. A notable mechanic is the drafting system, where you tuck in behind another car to reduce wind resistance and gain a speed boost for a slingshot pass. The races are fast and the AI is aggressive, often leading to tight, bumper to bumper racing where a single mistake can cost you several positions. It feels like a constant, tense battle for control on the track.
