ESPN National Hockey Night on Sega Genesis is basically the scrappy underdog of mid-90s hockey games—it plays a lot like EA’s NHL series, but with a slightly rougher edge. The controls are familiar if you’ve ever slapped a digital puck around back then: quick passes, clunky checks, and goalies that either stand there like a brick wall or flop around uselessly. The graphics are decent for ’94, though the animations can get a little janky when guys collide near the boards.
What’s cool is the ESPN branding—it’s got that old-school sports broadcast vibe with a fake score ticker and commentary that sounds like it’s being read off a napkin. Not as polished as NHL ’94, but if you’re into retro hockey games, it’s a fun deep cut to mess around with. Just don’t expect it to dethrone EA’s classic.
