Double Dribble: The Playoff Edition came out for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in some regions, in 1994. Konami published this follow up to their earlier arcade and NES basketball games. It arrived during a time when the 16-bit console wars were in full swing, and sports titles were a major battleground for capturing a player's attention on weekends.

You control a five man basketball team, switching between players on the fly to pass, steal, and shoot. The main objective is to outscore your opponent through four quarters, with the playoff mode letting you compete for a championship. Signature mechanics include the classic overhead view for most of the court, which then switches to a close up, side perspective when you drive for a layup or dunk. You can also call specific plays and attempt three point shots from behind the arc. The pacing is quick, and the computer opponents provide a decent challenge, especially on higher difficulty settings. It feels like a fast, arcade style take on basketball where a single steal can quickly turn into a breakaway score.
