Doom Troopers: Mutant Chronicles is one of those Sega Genesis games that looks way cooler than it has any right to be. You start off as this armored-up soldier blasting through mutant freaks in a grim, industrial wasteland—think Mad Max meets Warhammer 40K, but with that crunchy 16-bit aesthetic.

The first thing you notice? The controls are stiff as hell, but in a way that kinda works. Your guy moves like he’s wearing a fridge, but once you get used to it, the weighty feel makes every shotgun blast satisfying. And you’ll need those shots—enemies come at you from all angles, some crawling, some flying, all ugly as sin.

It’s not just mindless shooting, though. You’ve got limited ammo, so you’re constantly switching between weapons, trying not to waste rockets on weaklings. The levels are packed with hidden paths and power-ups, but good luck finding them when you’re getting swarmed by mutants mid-jump. Classic ’90s difficulty—brutal, but weirdly addictive.

If you dig gritty sci-fi and don’t mind wrestling with some jank, this one’s a blast from the past worth revisiting.
