Donald Duck gets a tropical makeover in Maui Mallard, a weirdly fun Sega Genesis platformer where he's basically Indiana Jones with feathers. Instead of his usual sailor outfit, he's rocking a Hawaiian shirt and hopping through jungles, temples, and—for some reason—a haunted hotel. The whole thing feels like Disney tried to make a Donkey Kong Country clone, complete with minecart levels and secret paths hidden behind vines.
You’ll spend most of your time bopping enemies with Donald’s staff (which, yeah, he just has now) or tossing shurikens when he transforms into "Cold Shadow," his ninja alter ego. The controls are a little stiff by today’s standards, but the art’s surprisingly lush for a 16-bit game—lots of deep blues and sunset oranges. Just don’t expect the story to make sense. One minute you’re chasing a stolen idol, the next you’re dodging lava in a volcano. Classic ‘90s logic.
It’s not the deepest platformer, but there’s charm in how aggressively ‘90s it is. The soundtrack’s all steel drums and weird tribal beats, and some levels even have that fake "3D" mode where the screen rotates. If you’ve got nostalgia for this era, it’s a solid weekend playthrough.
