About David Crane?s Amazing Tennis
I first played David Crane's Amazing Tennis on the Sega Genesis back in 1992, a game published by Absolute Entertainment. It arrived during a time when sports games were starting to move beyond very basic representations, and this one attempted to capture a more complete tennis match on the 16-bit system.
You control a single tennis player, moving them around the court to return the ball. The main objective is to win matches by outscoring your opponent in sets. The game introduced a notable use of foreground and background layers to simulate a sense of depth, making it easier to judge the ball's trajectory. You have access to different shot types, like lobs and volleys, which you select using the controller. The pacing is generally quick, though the computer opponent can be quite challenging, forcing you to anticipate shots rather than just react. It feels like a thoughtful attempt to translate the sport's spatial strategy into a video game.
