About Darwin 4081
Darwin 4081 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, published by Data East. It was part of that early wave of platformers on the system, games that were figuring out how to use the hardware for fast, colorful action. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it had its own particular style.
You control a small, robotic creature navigating a large, interconnected map. Your goal is to find and destroy the mother computer controlling the environment. The game is built on screen by screen exploration; each new screen loads as you cross the border, and you use a limited-use teleport ability to bypass obstacles or escape danger. Combat is simple, mostly just jumping on enemies or avoiding them entirely. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, as you search for the correct path and conserve your teleports for the right moments. It feels like a quiet, sometimes lonely puzzle box you are trying to solve.
