About Dahna Megami Tanjou
I first came across Dahna Megami Tanjou in the early 90s, a 1991 release for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in Japan. It was published by I'Max, a name you didn't see too often in the West. This was during that period when the 16-bit consoles were really hitting their stride, and developers were experimenting with different takes on established genres, trying to see what would stick with players.
You control a young hero on a quest to rescue the goddess Dahna. The game plays out screen by screen; you explore a large, interconnected world, clearing each single-screen area of enemies before you can move on to the next. Your main tools are a sword for close combat and a bow for attacking from a distance, and you'll need both to navigate the dungeons and overworld. The primary objective involves collecting the scattered pieces of the Triforce-like Crests to restore order. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be steep, demanding careful enemy observation and resource management. It feels like a methodical, sometimes punishing, journey through a world that doesn't hand you anything for free.
