About Crossfire
CrossFire came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by the company Masaya. It was part of that wave of early 90s action games that tried to blend different genres, in this case a top-down run and gun with some light adventure elements. You don't hear about it as much as some other titles from that year, but it had a distinct look and feel that made it stand out on the shelf.
You control a soldier navigating through interconnected areas, clearing each screen of enemies before you can proceed. Your main goal is to fight through these zones to ultimately destroy a supercomputer. You have a standard gun, but the key mechanic is finding and switching between special weapon pods; these change your firepower to things like a spread shot or homing missiles, which is crucial for dealing with the more crowded enemy patterns. The game is paced fairly quickly, with constant enemy respawns making you keep moving, and it gets quite difficult as you push further in. Playing it feels like a tense, constant scramble for the right weapon to survive the next onslaught.
