Cool Spot is one of those weirdly good licensed games from the '90s—you play as the 7-Up mascot, bouncing around soda bottles and shooting bubbles at angry seagulls. The first level drops you right into this beach scene with these crisp, colorful sprites, and the controls feel surprisingly tight for a game about a carbonated drink logo.
What I love is how they actually made the platforming work—you’ve got these little trampoline-y bottle caps to bounce off, tightropes made of straws, and these annoying crabs that take way too many hits. The music’s got that early ‘90s synth vibe, all bouncy and upbeat, which somehow fits perfectly when you’re hopping between floating ice cubes in a soda glass.
It’s harder than it looks, too. By level three, you’ll be sweating those precision jumps over spinning fans. But there’s something satisfying about nailing a tricky section and watching Spot do his little victory dance. If you grew up with a Genesis, this one’s a nostalgia trip worth revisiting.
