About Congo ? The Game (beta)
I've been playing Congo, the Sega Genesis beta that never got a full release. It was developed by Sega, I believe, and it's one of those early 90s platformers that feels very much of its time. The graphics and sound are typical for the hardware, with large, colorful sprites and music that tries to set a jungle adventure mood.
You control a jungle explorer, moving screen by screen through dense foliage and ancient ruins. Your main goal is to navigate these environments, which are filled with pitfalls and hostile wildlife. The primary mechanics involve careful jumping across gaps and using a machete to fend off creatures that emerge from the undergrowth. The pacing is deliberate, requiring you to watch for enemies that can knock you into bottomless pits, and the difficulty is quite unforgiving. It feels like a tense, methodical trek where a single mistimed jump ends your run.
