Comix Zone came out for the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Sega Technical Institute. It was a late release for the system, a time when developers were really pushing the hardware to its limits. You control Sketch Turner, a comic book artist who gets pulled into his own creation. Your goal is to fight your way through the pages of this hostile comic to confront the villain, Mortus. The game plays out screen by screen, with you moving from one panel to the next, often by literally tearing through the paper borders. Combat is a mix of punches, kicks, and found weapons like grenades; you can also use your pet rat, Roadkill, to scout ahead and fetch items in certain spots. It is a notoriously difficult game, with limited health pickups and enemies that hit hard, demanding careful movement and attack patterns. Playing it feels like a constant, frantic scramble for survival against the ink stained world trying to erase you.
