Columns III: Taiketsu! Columns World came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Sega. It was part of that wave of puzzle games competing for attention on the console, a direct follow up to the first two Columns titles. You got a solid, no frills puzzle experience that felt right at home on the system.

You control the falling tri colored gems, rotating them to line up three or more of the same color either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The main goal is to clear gems from the screen to prevent the stack from reaching the top. Its signature mechanics include the Flash Columns, which clear entire rows when matched, and the Versus mode where you can directly send garbage blocks to your opponent's screen. The game starts calmly but the speed ramps up steadily, demanding quicker decisions as the blocks pile up. It feels like a constant, pleasant battle against the rising tide of colored blocks.
