About Columns Iii - Taiketsu! Columns World (japan)

Columns III came out in 1994 for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in Japan. It was developed and published by Sega, arriving at a time when the console was well established and puzzle games were a staple of its library. This was the third main entry in the series, building directly on the mechanics of its predecessors.

You control the falling trios of colored gems, rotating them to align three or more of the same color either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally to make them vanish. The main objective is to outlast your opponent by clearing your own screen while sending garbage blocks over to theirs. Its signature mechanics include the Flash system, where clearing a certain number of gems charges a meter that lets you unleash a special attack, and the Versus mode which is the core of the experience, pitting you directly against another player or the CPU. The pacing is fast and the difficulty ramps up quickly, demanding quick decisions as the gems fall faster. It feels like a tense back-and-forth duel where a single mistake can turn the tide.
