About College Slam
College Slam came out for the Sega Genesis in 1996, developed by Iguana Entertainment and published by Acclaim. It was a time when arcade style sports games were common on the system, and this one focused entirely on college basketball teams. You got to play with official NCAA teams, which was a big part of its appeal back then.
You control a team of five players on the court, aiming to outscore your opponent before the clock runs out. The core gameplay involves passing, stealing, and shooting, with a special emphasis on performing flashy dunks. You can call for alley oops and trigger turbo boosts for a temporary speed advantage. The pacing is fast, and the computer opponents can be challenging, forcing you to learn the timing for blocks and long range shots. It feels like a chaotic, exaggerated version of basketball where a single dunk can shift the momentum of the entire game.
