Cliffhanger came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, published by Sony Imagesoft. It was part of that wave of games based directly on movies, trying to capture the big action scenes on the 16-bit hardware. You play as Gabe Walker, the mountain rescue ranger Sylvester Stallone played in the film, and the game follows the movie's plot about a heist in the Rockies.

You control Gabe through side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen across icy cliffs and inside caverns. Your main goal is to rescue the hostages, which involves a lot of platform jumping and fighting guards with your fists. A couple of the main mechanics are the climbing sections, where you have to time your leaps between handholds, and the occasional use of a zip-line to cross large gaps. The game is known for being quite difficult, with precise jumps required and enemies that can knock you off ledges easily. It feels like a constant test of your timing and patience as you navigate the hazardous terrain.
