Clay Fighter came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by Visual Concepts and published by Interplay. It was a strange sight on a console known for Sonic and Streets of Rage, a fighting game where every character was made of claymation. The look was completely different from the pixel-perfect sprites we were used to, giving it a lumpy, stop-motion charm that stood out immediately.

You pick a fighter like the snowman Blob or the voodoo doll Voodoo, then battle through a series of one-on-one fights. The main goal is to win the tournament by depleting your opponent's health bar before they deplete yours. The controls are simple, with basic punches, kicks, and special moves executed with quarter-circle motions. A signature mechanic is the ability to transform into a more powerful, monstrous version of your character once your health gets low enough. The pacing is slower than many fighting games of the time, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly. It feels a little clumsy and unrefined, but that's part of its oddball appeal.
