I've been playing the Chaos Engine 2 prototype for the Sega Genesis. It was developed by The Bitmap Brothers, the same team behind the original, and this version was never officially released. It feels like a piece of that specific era, a time when top down shooters were pushing the limits of 16 bit hardware.

You control one of six mercenaries, each with a unique weapon, navigating through screen by screen levels filled with biomechanical monsters. Your main goal is to destroy the Chaos Engine itself, which involves fighting through enemy swarms, solving simple environmental puzzles by finding keys, and collecting diamonds to purchase weapon upgrades between stages. The game is known for its methodical pacing; you cannot simply rush in, as you are often surrounded and must manage your limited ammunition carefully. It is a difficult game that demands careful positioning and resource management, creating a tense and deliberate experience from start to finish.
