Castle of Illusion on the Genesis (or Mega Drive, if you're fancy) is one of those classic Disney platformers that just nails the charm. You play as Mickey Mouse—not the watered-down modern version, but the old-school, determined little guy—hopping through forests, toy-filled rooms, and, of course, a creepy castle. The Japanese version, Fushigi no Oshiro Daibouken, is basically the same game but with a way cooler title.
What stands out is how tight the controls feel. Mickey bounces off enemies, tosses apples like a pro, and the levels have this dreamlike quality where one minute you're dodging giant books, the next you're sliding down a candy-coated slope. The music? Absolute earworms. I still hum the main theme sometimes.
It's not super long, but every stage has little secrets and alternate paths to find. And honestly, the final boss fight against Mizrabel is just the right kind of frustrating—you'll yell, but you'll also feel like a champ when you finally beat her. Still holds up today.
