Okay, so Bug’s Life on the Genesis is one of those licensed games that actually doesn’t suck. You play as Flik, the awkward ant from the movie, hopping through oversized leaves and dodging grasshoppers that look way scarier than they did in the film. The first level throws you right into it—you’re collecting berries, bouncing on mushrooms, and figuring out how to use Flik’s weird little inventions (that seed shooter comes in handy).

The graphics are surprisingly bright for a Genesis game, and the music’s got that bouncy, cartoony vibe. Some of the platforming gets tricky—there’s this one vine-swinging section that took me way too many tries—but it never feels unfair. And yeah, Hopper’s the final boss, and he’s exactly as much of a jerk as you’d expect. If you grew up with this movie or just like solid 16-bit platformers, it’s a fun little time capsule.

Also, pro tip: don’t skip the cutscenes. The pixel-art recreations of the movie moments are weirdly charming.
