Budokan: The Martial Spirit is one of those old-school Sega Genesis fighters that feels a little rough around the edges now, but man, it had its own weird charm. You pick from four martial arts styles—karate, kung fu, bo staff, or nunchaku—and fight your way up this dojo ladder. The controls are stiff by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about landing a perfectly timed bo staff swing.
What’s cool is how each weapon changes the feel of combat. Nunchaku are fast but weak, while the bo staff gives you reach but leaves you open if you whiff. The training minigames are janky as hell, but they actually help you get the timing down. And that soundtrack? Pure late-’80s synth cheese in the best way.
It’s not Street Fighter, but if you’re into retro fighters with personality, Budokan’s worth a few rounds for nostalgia alone.
