Brutal: Paws of Fury is one of those weird, forgotten Genesis fighters where all the characters are animals—like a street brawler version of a Saturday morning cartoon. You’ve got a tiger with a bandana, a wolf in a gi, even a kangaroo that fights like a mix between Blanka and a drunk boxer. The moves feel stiff compared to Street Fighter, but there’s something charming about how janky the special moves are when they actually land.
It’s definitely a product of the ‘90s fighting game boom, right down to the digitized voice yelling “Brutal!” when you start a match. Not gonna lie, the AI cheats like crazy on higher difficulties, but pulling off a flurry of claws and fur with the panther guy never gets old. If you’re into obscure fighting games with bizarre rosters, this one’s a weird little time capsule.
