About Brian Lara Cricket 96 (march 1996)
Brian Lara Cricket 96 came out for the Sega Genesis, known as the Mega Drive in many places, in March 1996. It was developed by Audiogenic and published by Codemasters, arriving at a time when cricket games were still finding their footing on 16-bit consoles. This title built directly on the foundation of its predecessor, aiming to offer a more complete simulation of the sport.
You control a team of eleven cricketers, taking charge of both batting and bowling. The main objective is to outscore your opponent within a limited number of overs or to bowl them all out. Key mechanics include a timing-based batting system where you press a button to play a shot, aiming for gaps in the field, and a bowling interface that lets you select delivery type, line, and length. Fielding is mostly automated, though you can attempt run-outs with a well-timed button press. The game moves at a deliberate pace, especially in test matches, and the difficulty can be sharp, punishing mistimed shots with easy catches. Playing it feels like a thoughtful, sometimes tense, back-and-forth struggle on the digital pitch.
