About Blue Almanac (japan)
Blue Almanac came out for the Sega Genesis in Japan back in 1991, developed by HAL Laboratory. It was part of that wave of early 90s console RPGs, a time when developers were figuring out how to translate the computer role playing game experience to a living room television. A translated version, renamed Star Odyssey, was apparently completed but never officially released outside Japan, with stories suggesting the localization quality was a major factor.
You control a party of adventurers exploring a world map and navigating through towns and dungeons one screen at a time. Your main goal is to uncover the source of a spreading evil, which involves traveling to different continents and delving into multi level labyrinths. Combat is turn based, triggered by random encounters on the field, where you input commands for your entire party before watching the round play out. You gather clues from townsfolk, upgrade your equipment in shops, and slowly piece together the quest. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you avoid grinding for experience. Playing it feels like methodically working through a dense, sometimes obtuse puzzle from a bygone era.
