About Blockout (world)
Blockout came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, published by California Dreams. It was part of that wave of puzzle games on 16-bit consoles where developers tried to translate arcade concepts into something you could play at home. This one took the familiar block-dropping idea and spun it into a third dimension.
You control the descent of various 3D shapes into a sunken pit, rotating them along multiple axes to fit together and complete solid layers. The main goal is to clear these horizontal layers before the pit fills up. The signature mechanics are the full three-dimensional rotation, letting you flip blocks in ways that flat Tetris never allowed, and the ability to view the pit from multiple angles to plan your drops. The pace starts deceptively calm but the speed ramps up steadily, demanding quicker spatial decisions. It feels like solving a frantic, ever-changing architectural puzzle with your hands.
