Best of the Best is one of those early Genesis fighting games that feels a little rough around the edges now, but man, it had its charm. You pick from a roster of international fighters—each with their own exaggerated karate gi and fighting style—and jump into these tiny, flat arenas where the camera zooms in weirdly close during fights.
The controls are stiff compared to later fighters, but there’s something satisfying about landing a spinning kick just right. The announcer yells "FIIIGHT!" in this hilariously dramatic voice before every match, and the crowd cheers like you’re in some underground tournament. It’s not Street Fighter, but if you grew up with a Genesis, you probably threw a few rounds into this one.
Fun fact: The European version has slightly different music and a few tweaks from the US release. Not a huge difference, but neat if you’re into that kind of thing.
