About Battle Squadron
Battle Squadron came out for the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed by Innerprise Software. It was part of that early wave of shooters on the system, a time when developers were figuring out how to push the hardware with fast action and detailed sprites. You got a lot of games trying to capture the feel of the arcade cabinets, and this was one of them.
You pilot a lone starfighter against an overwhelming alien armada. Your main goal is to survive the onslaught, clearing each vertically scrolling stage of enemies and massive bosses. Two mechanics stand out: you can collect power-ups to switch between different weapon types, like spread shots and lasers, and a second player can join in for simultaneous co-op, which completely changes the dynamic. The pacing is relentless, with enemy patterns that require quick memorization, and the difficulty feels demanding but fair. It feels like a genuine test of your reflexes and planning.
