Battle Golfer Yui is one of those weird, wonderful Sega Genesis gems that shouldn’t work but totally does. Imagine teeing off like a normal golf game, except the courses are packed with moving platforms, windmills straight out of a Mario level, and rival golfers who straight-up attack your ball mid-air. Yui’s got this ridiculous anime energy—like, she’s not just putting, she’s charging up special shots with a power meter that feels straight out of a fighting game.
The first time I played, I lost three balls in a row to some jerk who kept summoning tornadoes. But once you get the hang of timing your swings and using the terrain (that uphill sand trap is brutal), it clicks. The music’s got that classic Genesis synth crunch, and the sprite work is surprisingly detailed for a golf game—Yui’s victory pose alone is worth the price of admission. Just don’t expect anything resembling real golf.
If you’re into retro sports games with a side of chaos, this one’s a hole-in-one.
